Caring for your Carpet

The natural benefits of pure New Zealand wool help wool carpets keep their good looks longer. The naturally scaly surface of wool fibre makes it resist soiling and release dirt easily due to the unique structure of the wool fibre. Also, wool has natural elasticity, so it stands up to everyday wear and tear. And wool fibre’s natural coating prevents penetration by water-based liquids. This is especially beneficial, because around 80% of household spills are water-based.

The old adage that you should leave new carpet for twenty-four hours to 'settle' is incorrect. You can vacuum your new carpet straight away. It’s important to note that new carpet will shed small fibres. These fibres become loose, not due to a manufacturing fault, but because they are excess fibres that are not bonded to the carpet backing. Some carpets will shed fibres for longer than others.

Here are some tips to help you keep your carpet looking great:

  • Vacuum regularly
  • Clean up spills as soon as they happen
  • Scoop up solids before cleaning
  • Blot as much liquid as possible using clean white paper towel
  • Clean using a recommended spot removal agent for the specific stain
  • Rinse with cold or lukewarm water only
  • Blot dry with an absorbent material such as paper towelling or use cold air fan to complete drying
  • Professionally clean as required. Only steam cleaning is recommended – this should generally be done every two years.

Note:

Never over saturate your carpet as this may cause the hessian backing to bleed and separate from the carpet.

Wools of New Zealand and the AS/NZS Standards recommend that a rotary brush head should not be used on loop pile carpet

Occasionally, off-the-shelf cleaning products can "set" a stain, making it impossible for a professional to remove. If the stain is serious or you are unsure of what it is, it’s best to call in the experts straight away rather than tackling it yourself.
